Welcome
to the Catholic Parish |
Most often within the Bible Jesus’ words are warm and comforting. He speaks about peace and love and joy and forgiveness. But once in a while Jesus also speaks very bluntly, as in today’s Gospel. Here he tells us that belief in him will cause divisions. There are two things that are disturbing in this Gospel -- first of all, he tells us that the divisions and conflicts will happen within families. It is not only among friends and neighbours that this will happen, but within the family. The other disturbing thing is the reason for the divisions -- and that is Jesus himself. He says "I have come to bring divisions". Once again division, tensions and conflict within families. It is not a matter of Catholic & Protestants within a family, but rather those who love and practice their faith, those who believe in Jesus Christ and follow Him and those who do not practice faith. "I have come to bring divisions" -- and I think that is a message that all of us can relate to for I am sure that when you think of your family, not only brothers and sisters, but the extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, godchildren and so on, we can think of those who do not practise the faith. We respect them and love them but there is a division, a tension and strain. This is what Jesus acknowledges in this Gospel. And not only that, it can be painful when a family member does not practise the faith/live out faith. Let’s face it, it can be painful. I know for myself. I try to have a good and strong relationship with Jesus Christ, to help create a vibrant church and being part of that. And to love the Mass, to love the Eucharist. The Gospel could challenge us then to think of reconciliation. How can I, as a believer, bring such people to Jesus Christ; to bring them into the Body of Christ, the Church. First, recognize that we are not perfect in our faith, that we need conversion and help. And then, what kind of example am I? Live out my faith -- church, home, work, school......listen to ourselves. How do I live out my faith? What examples do I offer? How do I draw people to Jesus Christ? And yet, the final word may be to relax. Perhaps if we take care of one another. It is Jesus Christ who will change hearts & lives.
